16:15-17:30 CEST on June 3, 2024
SBSTA60, Bonn / Zoom
This event explores the pivotal role of national agroecology frameworks to coordinate action on climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, as countries being to update their national plans on climate change, biodiversity, and land and desertification. It will discuss the crucial role of climate finance to strengthen ecosystem-based approaches.
2024 marks a special year with the 3 Rio Conventions’ parties convening to take stock of progress made, and the revision of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by COP30 in 2025 getting closer. As countries update their NDCs, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) & National Action Programmes (NAPs).
Agroecology, and national agroecology frameworks in particular, have an important role to play as they can catalyze governmental action by serving multiple national objectives related to national climate, biodiversity and land conservation commitments.
These frameworks are being developed all over the world both in the Global South and the Global North. Interesting initiatives are notably taking shape in the form of National Agroecology Strategies being launched or finalized in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Financing of these initiatives is key to leverage the potential of agroecology to support (1) the transformation of food systems to more sustainable practices as well as (2) countries’ climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives.
Join us for this even online via Zoom, and in person at the Berlin Room of the United Nations Campus in Bonn.
